Flying to Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland | The First & Only Airport Beach in the World!

Isle of Barra is one of the most beautiful remote islands in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Boasting white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Isle of Barra is a prime example of how Scotland can be a top beach destination alongside incredible natural mountainous landscapes and historic lochs.

Getting to Isle of Barra can be a task on its own. You can catch a ferry from Oban which takes many hours on the road and on the ferry. So to be a little more efficient, you should fly! And here's my reason why.

Glasgow to Isle of Barra Beach Airport

The airport in Isle of Barra is located on the Traigh Mhor beach and it’s the only airport in the world where flights are scheduled based on the tides and where all commercial planes land on an actual silver beach.

We traveled during summer at the end of July with a return Logan Air flight from Glasgow Airport and it costed us £164.42 per person. It's the only airline that flies into the Isle of Barra, with daily flights that take an hour each way from Glasgow and the plane itself is blue, tiny and cute, with three seats per row only and can fit a maximum of approximately 20 passengers. You can also see into the cockpit! It was incredible to see how the pilots worked and what they had to check off before having the plane take off the runway.

Amazing to think that you can leave the bustle of Glasgow city and arrive straight into a secluded beach paradise up north, within an hour!

An unforgettable experience

The flight itself was incredible! We had clear skies while flying into the Outer Hebrides so we could see the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park mountain ranges, Oban, Isle of Mull and all the different types of landscapes from above. You’ll know when you’ve entered the Outer Hebrides when you see the incredibly turquoise waters!

And finally, actually landing on a beach airport runway, which I've never experienced before in my life, was unforgettable! It's exciting when you first catch a glimpse of the beach runway and airport from the pilot's cockpit. I can't really describe how surreal it is, I'd just recommend you experience it for yourself.

The airport itself is small and with facilities that are currently being upgraded, but it leaves a tepid impression compared to the vastness of the gorgeous beach runway. I'd love to fly back to Isle of Barra, it's such a unique experience.

If you're looking to visit Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides then consider flying in onto the world's only beach airport. You won't regret it!
